What We Collect About Your Text

Nothing. We do not collect, store, or transmit:

  • The text you type or paste
  • Files you upload (TXT, DOCX, PDF)
  • Any content you analyze with this tool

Your text is processed entirely in your browser and never sent to our servers or any third party, including Google Analytics.

How It Works

When you upload a file or type text:

  1. TXT files are read directly by your browser's native File API.
  2. DOCX files are parsed client-side using mammoth.js, a pure JavaScript library that extracts text from Word documents without a server.
  3. PDF files are parsed using Mozilla's PDF.js, which reads the PDF structure entirely in the browser.
  4. Word counts are calculated using standard JavaScript string methods — no external API calls.

All processing happens locally. No data is uploaded to a server, and nothing is cached or stored after you close the page.

Analytics & Site Usage

We use Google Analytics to understand how visitors use our site (pages viewed, time spent, general location). This helps us improve the tool and fix issues. Google Analytics may collect:

  • Pages you visit on our site
  • Time spent on each page
  • Browser type and device information
  • General geographic location (country/region level)
  • Referral source (how you found us)

Your text content is never sent to Google Analytics. All text processing happens locally in your browser, and analytics only tracks which pages you visit—not what you type or upload.

Google Analytics uses cookies to recognize returning visitors. You can opt out using browser extensions like Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on, or by blocking third-party cookies in your browser settings.

We do not use Facebook Pixel, advertising trackers, or any behavioral targeting tools. This site is ad-free.

Self-Hosted Resources

The Geist typeface and all static assets are self-hosted and served from our domain. The only external requests this site makes are to Google Analytics.

Open Source Libraries

Total Word Counter is built with Astro and the libraries listed above, all of which are open-source and auditable. If you want to verify that your text stays local, you can inspect the source code or check your browser's Network tab — you will see zero upload requests.

Changes to This Policy

If we ever change how this tool works in a way that affects your privacy (for example, by adding an optional server-side feature), we will update this page and note the change clearly.
